Psychiatry residency is a four-year program in Iran. This comprehensive four-year training program has 24 to 27 residents. The program includes clinical rotations as follows:

  • The first year of training emphasis is on attaining competency in evaluative, diagnostic, and treatment skills. This year is primarily an inpatient year, with rotations on the adult inpatient unit and addiction psychiatry.

  • The second year includes the emergency ward, general ward, child and adolescent ward, and addiction psychiatry.

  • In the third year, residents gradually begin psychotherapy training with patient assignments. Residents have a psychotherapy supervisor to aid in developing psychotherapy competencies.

  • Residents in their fourth year will complete the remaining requirements for program completion. Clinical rotations will commence in the fourth year covering community psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, neurology, and psychosomatic illness rotations, as for the Consultation and Liaison (C/L) psychiatry services in Afzalipoor hospital.

  • Over the four years of residency, the didactic series covers the spectrum of theoretical and practical psychiatric knowledge necessary for effective practices.
